Private Email in Denmark:
GDPR-Secure Mailbox Without Ads or Ad Targeting

A Danish mailbox with no ad targeting and servers in the EU. Your messages are not used for AI training or profiling – and you know exactly who runs the service.

No content scanning No targeted ads Servers in the EU No data reselling

What Does "Private Email" Actually Mean in 2026?

Most people think private email just means others don't know your address. That's not enough. A truly private email provider doesn't read your messages to show you ads, doesn't sell your communication patterns to data brokers, and isn't subject to laws that give foreign governments access to your data.

Most large, free email services are funded by advertising. In practice, this means your inbox is scanned and your communication patterns are analysed to target ads. That is not a criticism – it is simply the business model. The question is whether it suits you.

Which Law Governs Your Email?

Where your data physically sits is not enough. What matters is which law governs the company behind the service.

🇺🇸 US-based services

The US Cloud Act (2018) gives US authorities the right to demand access to data from US companies – regardless of whether the server is in the US, Denmark, or Ireland. This applies to Gmail, Outlook, and other services owned by US companies.

🇩🇰 Danish/European service

Skyen.live is owned and operated by me, Peter Hjardemaal Garbæk (Garbæk IT, CVR 21664480). I am exclusively subject to EU GDPR and Danish law. No Cloud Act. Your data can only be disclosed pursuant to a Danish court order – and as any Danish business, I am of course obliged to comply with lawful requests from Danish authorities if required.

The Checklist: What Should You Look For?

Use this list the next time you evaluate an email provider. Skyen.live – and I, Peter – check every box, and I am personally accountable for each one.

Skyen.live vs. Other Privacy Services

I am not here to say others are bad. But there are nuances that make skyen.live the natural choice for many Danes.

Feature Skyen.live ProtonMail Gmail
Server country Denmark, EU Switzerland (not EU) USA
Cloud Act risk None No (Switzerland, outside EU) Yes
IMAP/SMTP Yes – all clients Only via Bridge app Yes
Danish support Yes, personal No No

ProtonMail is a serious privacy service and a good choice for those who want end-to-end encryption on everything. You do not need to be a cryptographer to have private email, though. Skyen.live provides a strong privacy level with personal support in Danish – simple and accessible for everyone.

Part of the #danmarkskifter Movement

In early 2026, thousands of Danes came together around a shared decision: to make a conscious choice about which digital services they use and trust. The #danmarkskifter movement was about shifting focus, shifting habits, and shifting platforms – to services that respect your data and your sovereignty as a user.

Skyen.live is built for exactly that kind of conscious choice. Danish infrastructure, open standards, and a business model that does not depend on knowing everything about you. Want to try? It takes under 5 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are my emails encrypted on skyen.live? +

Yes. All data in transit is encrypted with TLS. Emails are stored encrypted on my servers in Denmark. I also support PGP encryption if you want end-to-end encryption with specific contacts.

What happens to my data if I delete my account? +

All your data – emails, calendar entries and contacts – is permanently deleted from my servers within 30 days of account deletion. No backdoors and no "we keep it anyway" policy.

Where in Denmark/EU are the servers? +

Skyen.live is run by me, Peter Hjardemaal Garbæk (Garbæk IT, CVR 21664480), and my primary servers are hosted at Contabo in the EU. I am exclusively subject to Danish and European law – no Cloud Act. I do not scan your emails and do not use them for AI training. Note that, like any Danish business, I am obliged to comply with lawful requests from Danish authorities if required.

What is data sovereignty and why does it matter? +

Data sovereignty means that you – not a large tech company in California – have real control over your data. It is about which law applies, who can demand access, and whether you can move your data freely. With skyen.live and open protocols like IMAP, you are never locked in.

Can I keep my existing Gmail content when I switch? +

Yes. You can import all old emails from Gmail via IMAP directly in your mail client (Thunderbird, Apple Mail, etc.). My guide at /alternativ-til-gmail walks you through it step by step.

Is skyen.live free forever? +

The basic plan is and will remain free. My business model is based on paying users who want more storage, custom domains, or extra features – not on monetising your data.

Does skyen.live support my own domain name (e.g. peter@mycompany.dk)? +

Yes. With a premium subscription you can attach your own domain and get email, calendar and contacts under it. Contact me via support to get started.
